The AIMHI Reimbursement Committee held a round-table and received expert advice from Kim Stanley, the Chief Client Advocacy Officer for EMS|MC and Matt Zavadsky from PWW|AG.
Committee members heard from Kim and Matt on the thorny issue of billing for patients who are deceased, either on-scene, or after a resuscitation attempt. Kim presented information on the Medicare reimbursement rules and procedures for billing for deceased patients, the average billed amount and average reimbursement of claims paid from the EMS|MC database.
The committee then had a ‘lively’ discussion on the merits, pitfalls and perils of billing for deceased patients, and potential policies agencies may wish to adopt related to this practice.
